New Talent – David Rosenberg
David Rosenberg, aged
34, is a founding member of Shunt, a ten strong co-operative based in a former
railway arch in Bethnal Green, Their Time Our award-winning show ‘Dance
Bear Dance. Runs until May 11.
Training?
I spent some time in Poland and Portugal and then did a post grad at Central
School of Speed and Drama. Before that I studied medicine.
How did you get involved in Shunt?
I met most of the company at Central. We were doing a show based on medieval
torture and needed a space where we could do stuff that wouldn’t instantly
be classified as theatre. That’s when we found the Bethnal Green arch.
What do you do there?
We argue. And we freeze – sometimes it’s cold in the arch that
everyone’s too pissed off to rehearse. And we try to create shows that
are events for audiences who, ideally, don’t know what they’re
in for.
What’s your role in Shunt?
I directed our last three productions. But if you say you direct, people get
a very particular idea about what you do. I spent a lot of time during rehearsals
for ‘Dance Bear Dance’ using a pneumatic drill.
